Stellar-Mama contains –
Active Extrafolate-S (as 5-MTHF), is a 3rd generation Folate that does not need to be broken down by the body through a complex enzymatic metabolic process like conventional synthetic Folic Acid. This means that it is ready to be used by the body immediately. It is 7 x more bioavailable (better absorbed) than synthetic Folic Acid.
Myo-inositol, which when combined with Folate significantly reduces the incidence of Neural Tube Defects rather than using Folate alone.
24mg Amino Acid Chelated Iron. This form of Iron is softer on the stomach and has a lower side effect profile that does not give you constipation, black stools or nausea.
Omega-3 Fish Oil, which is rich in DHA (400mg) for brain and eye development, has no fishy odour or fishy taste and assists in combating the usual reflux associated with other fish oils.
Stellar-Mama is suitable for use by pescatarians or vegetarians who eat fish.

Folate vs Folic Acid? Folate is the naturally occurring form of Vitamin B9 (a metabolically active form) whereas Folic Acid is a synthetic form of Vitamin B9 (an inactive synthetic form). The body does not convert Folic Acid into active Vitamin B9 very well, so un-metabolised Folic acid may build up in the bloodstream which can have negative health effects. Thus, Folate (5-MTHF) and Folic Acid are not the same thing.

Some people are poor Folic Acid metabolisers. They usually have a polymorphism of the enzyme MTHFR. In these cases, it is essential that these people take Folate (5-MTHF) as they cannot metabolize synthetic Folic Acid.

Folate is essential during pregnancy as it helps prevent Neural Tube Defects such as Spina Bifida and Cleft Palate. The highest risk for Neural Tube Defects occurs between the 21st and 28th day after conception when the embryonic neural tube closes. This is in the first month of pregnancy, often before a woman even knows that she is pregnant. Therefore, one should start supplementing with Folate at least 2 to 3 months prior to falling pregnant as per the World Health Organisation’s Guidelines.
